PCA KINGAROY PEANUT FESTIVAL:
September 20, 2006 Despite clashing with the Queensland State Election, the 2006 PCA Peanut Festival held in Kingaroy, (right), was another great success. The Kingaroy Chamber of Commerce estimated the crowd to be at least equal to last year with strong support from the local community. The day began with the DPI&F Farmers' Breakfast which was held in O'Neill Square from 8am. Farmers and their families were invited to attend to help celebrate the 90th anniversary of the DPI&F in Kingaroy. More than 60 people were served a free hot breakfast and were brought up-to-date on the latest peanut industry news. PCA, in conjunction with The Peanut Van, also unveiled a new peanut product Lyte and Crunchy. The Peanut Festival itself featured the Street Parade, the Kingaroy Gold Bike Race, street stalls and amusement rides plus a special aerobatic performance by one of the RAAF Roulettes. The Mary Ann steam locomotive, (left), was hauled down from Maryborough especially for the Peanut Festival weekend. This unique steam train took visitors up and down a short track and proved very popular. The annual Peanut Thresher Pull was again well-supported by the crowd and attracted five teams. The South Burnett North farmers' team successfully defended their Australian title from 2005. The Peanut Festival was officially launched on Friday night with a Mayoral Function at the South Burnett Visitor Information Centre which included the inaugural auction of entries in the "World Cushion Competition". Patrons bid on cushions with all proceeds going to the charity "Goods for the West". The auction raised $1980!
