Canadian researchers have shown that resveratrol, the powerful antioxidant found in peanuts and red wine, may help stop the development of "metabolic syndrome", the cluster of symptoms that increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Medical researchers Jason Dyck and Sandra Davidge are particularly interested in researching possible ways of helping babies that have suffered growth restrictions in the womb.

Federal Government funding announced last week is great news for peanut lovers as it will allow researchers at the University of South Australia to begin an evaluation of peanuts as a potential "brain food".

The $80,007 grant from the Australian Research Council is to "evaluate peanuts as a source of bioactive nutrients for enhancement of endothelial function and cognitive performance".

Researchers in the United States have suggested a diet high in peanuts and peanut oil can have a beneficial effect on Type II diabetes.

The team, based in New Jersey, tested mice with Type II diabetes with a diet high in oleic acid to see if the dietary change had any affect on insulin production.

Spanish researchers have shown that a Mediterranean diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fish plus a handful of nuts every day can decrease a known risk factor for heart disease - metabolic syndrome.

The researchers reported the results of a one-year randomised trial in the December 2008 edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
